What is the difference between Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor and Intel Core Duo?
The confusion arises from marketing talk.
“Core Duo” is a specific line of mobile/laptop CPUs from Intel, just like “Core 2 Duo” is a newer line of Intel CPUs for both desktops and laptops. Core Duo is older and less powerful than Core 2 Duo, which was introduced in 2006.
“Dual-Core” is a general term that means having 2 cores,-it’s not specific to any manufacturer or series. Just like “4-cylinder engine” could apply to any car manufacturer, the same applies to “dual core”. All of Intel’s Core Duo, Core 2 Duo, AMD’s X2 and the old Pentium-D qualify as dual-core cpus. Of all dual-core processors, Intel’s Core 2 Duos offer the best performance.
When you see “dual-core” advertised without anything else specified, it’s usually (but not always) because it’s an older design they’re trying to sell. For example, an advertisement stating “Dual Core 3Ghz Intel processor” without any model number doesn’t say exactly what you’re getting, it could be a shiny new Core 2 Duo E8400, or a slow Pentium-D that’s been sitting on a shelf since 2005. So you just need to read the detailed specs. When a processor is particularly desirable, ads almost always mention the specific model number.
